An Annual Mid-Autumn Festival Reunion

[align=left]“The moon of August 15th is round, while the mooncake is yummy and sweet.”, Chinese people have a special emotion towards eating mooncake on Mid-Autumn Festival, which is expressed perfectly in common saying culture. There are lots of stories about eating mooncake in the Mid-Autumn Festival, the most popular one is the story of Hou Yi and Chang E.

According to legend in ancient times,there were ten suns in the sky which burned down the ground, and dried up the sea. People could not survive anymore.

The event shocked the hero named Hou Yi, and he climbed up to the peak of Kunlun Mountain. With the magic power, he drew the magic bow and shot down the other 9 redundant suns.

One day, Hou Yi visited his friend living in Kunlun Mountain, and he happened to come across the Queen Mother who was passing by the mountain. The Queen gave him two elixirs. People will become immortal after eating one of them and can go to the heaven as god with two. However, Hou Yi was reluctant to leave his wife alone, so he left the elixirs stored by Chang E. Chang E hid the elixirs in her dresser box. Unluckily, Peng Meng saw her hiding the elixirs.Three days later, HouYi led people to go hunting, but the foxy Peng Meng cheated Hou Yi by pretending to be ill and stayed at home.

Shortly after Hou Yi went out home, Peng Meng ran into Hou Yi’s house with a sword and coerced Chang E to hand out the elixirs. Chang E knew that she couldn't beat Peng Meng , so she made a decision right away. She turned back and opened the box, got out the elixirs and swallowed them down.

Consuming the elixirs, Chang E immediately left the ground, got out the window and flied towards sky. Because she missed her husband very much,she landed the moon which is closest to earth and became a fairy.

At dusk, HouYi came back home. Maids sadly told him what had happened during the daytime.Shocked and angry, HouYi went out to kill the villain with his sword, only found out that Peng Meng had already run away. HouYi was very regretful and cried sorrowfully. The heartstricken HouYi looked up at the starlit sky and called his wife's name. At that time, he noticed that the moon that night was especially clear and bright. And there is a moving figure, which looked like Chang E very much. Chang E stands in front of the moon every night in order to see her husband. Hou Yi hurried to ask his servants to lay out an incense table in the back garden and put Chang's favorite sweets,fruits and mooncakes on it to worship remotely Chang E who was missing him somuch.

People who heard the news that Chang E flied to the moon and became a fairy also laid out an incense table under the moon to pray for good luck and safety. Since then, worshiping the moon in the Mid-Autumn Festival became popular among the people. The tradition of eating the mooncake in the Mid-Autumn Festival has been kept over the time, although there are many other stories relating to mooncake. Now people gradually regard enjoying the moon and mooncake as a symbol of family reunion.
